Route 146/146A Intersection Improvement Project Environmental Monitoring

Foit-Albert staff was consistently on-site to provide visual/olfactory observations and to assist the project contractor and guide soil segregation efforts. Continuous grab soil samples were screened throughout the excavation to the former gas station site. The samples were selected in order to investigate soil conditions in the vicinity of the project corridor construction limits, specifically, in regards to the presence of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs). The soil samples were field screened for evidence of VOCs using a photo-ionization detector (PID). Soil with headspace readings below 5 ppm were characterized as non-impacted; soils with headspace readings ranging from 5 ppm to 30 ppm were stockpiled and samples were submitted for laboratory analysis.  Based on the result of laboratory analysis, potential re-use as on-site fill material was evaluated.  soils with headspace readings above 30 ppm were separately stockpiled and subsequently transported to a NYSDEC-approved landfill for disposal.  This soil was also sampled and submitted for laboratory analysis.

In addition, Foit-Albert collected solid and liquid samples from a former steel tank encountered during excavation.  Samples were submitted for laboratory analysis.

Project Details The project involved the construction of a new traffic roundabout at the intersection of state and county highways along with associated earthwork, grading and drainage, water, gas, electric, lighting and fiber optic utilities, signage, sidewalks and asphalt pavements, landscaping and amenities improvement.
